What is a Crunchy Cliche?

Before becoming a mom, I was pretty far from crunchy.  Okay, fine, I was (and still am) a vegetarian, but that's where the crunchiness ended.  Fast forward to now, and out of nowhere it seems I've turned into this crunchy, natural momma.

It all started with having a home birth.  That decision was more a fear of doctors and hospitals than anything else.  After our home birth, it just made sense for the little peanut to sleep in between us rather than in a crib - which has led to our current status of co sleeping.  Cloth diapering just made sense monetarily.  Not immunizing took a lot of research, but that's where we ended up.  Breastfeeding was just obvious.  I could go on and on.....but you know what a crunchy momma is like, right?!

When you have a baby and are a stay at home mom, you naturally are looking for other moms that can relate.  I would gravitate towards moms that used my same midwife or shopped at the same cloth diapering store or was wearing their baby in the grocery store.....but then I realized that I was different.

You see, most of these moms were fat.  Yup, I said it.  Their hair wasn't done and there was no makeup in sight.  Yup, I said that too.  They had old baggy jeans on, carried a knitted handbag, and wore Danskos (which I'm sure are comfortable but have you seen them?!).  I know what you're thinking.  How could you be so superficial?  But to me, someone's outer appearance can tell you a lot about a person.

But I digress.

I felt different because these crunchy mommas, who were raising their children very similar to how I was raising mine, had very different hobbies.  I must workout most days of the week, they were looking a little flabby.  I buy my child's hat, they knit one.  I buy my child's clothing, they sew them.  I buy my food, they eat food they've canned over the winter (is that even correct?  I know nothing about canning.).

Turns out, that made me a crunchy cliche.  I'm trying to be less superficial, but in the meantime, I'll be hanging out with the working moms who have fit in time at the gym and use disposable diapers.
